Understanding the table

Each of the 50 states and DC have an office of some kind, under the purview of that state's Attorney General, that handles consumer protection. This table lists the state as well as a couple of key pieces of information that we'll describe below:

  1. Complaint URL is a link you can follow to find out more about how your state handles consumer complaints. Some of these links go directly to a form that you can use to begin your complaint whereas others simply provide documentation on how to submit a complaint.
  2. Specific Regulation is a specific law/ regulation in that state that discusses consumer protection and false claims. You should reference that regulation when submitting your complaint
  3. "AG Sues" is simply an indication of whether the state's Attorney General will sue violators of the consumer protection laws of that state.
  4. Private Party Can Sue? is an indication of whether a private citizen of that state can also sue for violation of the consumer protection laws of that state. You will encounter 3 possible values in that cell:
    1. No which, of course, means that citizens can't sue (likely because that's handled by the Attorney General)
    2. Yes which means that any private citizen of the state can sue
    3. Direct Victims means that only a citizen of that state who have fallen victim of a false claim can file suit.
    4. Likely Victim means that a citizen of that state who would potentially fall victim can file a suit. In the context of overlays, if you are the owner or otherwise have pecuniary interest in a business that has a website, you're in this category.
